MEET BU-MA MA,
Cass
From having my own boutique many moons ago, The Screaming Hippie, I discovered a deep love for sourcing and hunting treasures from local artisans across Indonesia, India, Turkey, Mexico and Thailand.
Fifteen years later, that same passion has led me back to celebrating the beauty and craftsmanship of artisan rugs, this time with a whole lot more sustainability and the wisdom that comes with age.
Indonesia has always had a special pull on me, both for work and play. Over the years, I’ve been endlessly inspired by the tradition of batik. My first rug came home with me after a trip to Bali and eight years on, it still lives in my bathroom (mould-free despite the Northern Rivers rain!) and still makes my heart sing.
Now, I’m excited to share that same joy through BU-MA, a celebration of authentic artisanship, connection and the beautiful stories woven into every piece.
BU-MA is made by hand using re-used 100% cotton batik sourced across Indonesia, given new life in the form of one-of-a-kind rugs.
Made to last and easy to live with, BU-MA Rugs are fully machine-washable and designed to bring warmth, colour and a sense of story into your home.
BU-MA TALES
Behind every BU-MA rug is a family-owned business in Indonesia since 1992, years of batik tradition. Generations have worked side by side keeping their craft alive through patience, skill and pride in every stitch.
Each thread carries not just colour and texture, but the warmth and heritage of its makers. Together, we create pieces that connect worlds through a shared appreciation of honest, hands-on artistry.
BU-MA isn’t just about rugs. It’s about exchange. It’s about authenticity. It’s about slowing down, celebrating colour and honouring the people and stories behind the things we bring into our homes.
WE DONATE
BU-MA is proud to give back to Indonesia through donation of every rug sold. 5% of profit goes directly back into causes close to Cass’s heart.
